Para-aramid

High-performance fibre class of aromatic polyamide with para linkage — basis of Kevlar®, Twaron® and Technora®.
Description
Para-aramids are aromatic polyamides whose amide bridges are attached to the benzene ring in the para position. The resulting strongly aligned molecular chains, cross-linked by hydrogen bonds, produce one of the highest tensile strengths of any organic fibre. Key brands: Kevlar® (DuPont™, 1971), Twaron® (Teijin, 1987) and Technora® (copolymer, Teijin).
Typical values are tensile strength 2900–3600 MPa and modulus 60–130 GPa. Para-aramids are flame retardant and heat stable up to about 500 °C, but sensitive to UV, strong acids and bases. Applications: ballistic vests, firefighter and motorcycle apparel, cut-resistant gloves (EN 388), brake pads, tyres, composites and ropes.

Global production of para- and meta-aramids currently amounts to about 100,000 t per year, dominated by DuPont™ and Teijin.
