Polynosic

Early high-wet-modulus viscose from the 1950s — precursor of today's modal fibre, with high wet strength and mercerisable hand.
Description
Polynosic is a particularly highly oriented regenerated cellulose in the rayon family, developed in Japan in the early 1950s (Tachikawa) and marketed in Europe, among others, as Zantrel® (American Enka). The process produces fibres with markedly higher wet modulus and wet strength than classic viscose and laid the ground for today's modal fibre.
Polynosic fibres can be mercerised, bleached and dyed like cotton. They have a smoother, silky hand and yield particularly durable, dimensionally stable blouses, shirts and fine women's outerwear. In pure form polynosic is today largely superseded by modal (Lenzing™), but survives in Japanese premium collections and some denim blends.
