Spectra® fibre
Also known as: Spectra, UHMWPE fibre (Honeywell)
UHMWPE fibre from Honeywell, technically related to Dyneema®, used for ballistic and cut-resistant applications.
Description
Spectra® is the high-performance UHMWPE fibre manufactured by Honeywell (USA). Like Dyneema® it is based on gel-spun ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, but produced with its own formulation and process window.
Typical grades are Spectra® 900, 1000 and 2000 with increasing tensile strength. Applications include ballistic soft laminates (Spectra Shield®), cut-resistant gloves (EN 388), lashing straps, fishing and marine ropes, and light backpack fabrics. Like Dyneema®, the fibre is chemical- and UV-resistant, but not usable under sustained load above 90 °C and cannot be dyed or bonded conventionally.
- UHMWPE fibre from Honeywell
- Tensile strength up to approx. 3.5 GPa
- Density 0.97 g/cm³
- Ballistics, gloves, ropes
Spectra® and Dyneema® are often used synonymously in trade, but are separate brand and production families.
