Also known as: Bamboo viscose, Bamboo rayon

Description

Bamboo fibres for textiles are almost always extracted from fast-growing giant bamboo. The cellulose of the bamboo stem is dissolved in a chemical viscose process and spun into filaments — strictly speaking this is a regenerated fibre, not a pure natural fibre. True mechanically retted bamboo bast fibres (processed like linen) are rare and coarse.

Bamboo viscose is soft, cool on the skin, absorbent and drapes fluidly. The antibacterial properties often advertised for raw bamboo generally do not survive the viscose process — the US FTC has repeatedly banned such marketing claims. Environmental assessment depends heavily on whether closed-loop solvent systems (as used for lyocell) are employed.

  • Very soft, silky hand with excellent drape
  • High moisture absorption and pleasant cooling feel
  • Usually a regenerated fibre (viscose) — not to be confused with a pure natural fibre
  • OEKO-TEX and FSC certificates indicate cleaner production
