Description

Cotton (Gossypium) is a plant-based natural fibre from the seed hairs of the cotton plant, cultivated mainly in India, China, the USA, Pakistan, Brazil and West Africa. Chemically it consists almost entirely of cellulose and is soft, skin-friendly, absorbent and easy to wash at 60°C or above.

The fibre absorbs up to 20 % of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet, which is why it is used extensively for garments worn close to the skin such as T-shirts, polo shirts, underwear and bed linen. Cotton wrinkles easily, has moderate elasticity and can shrink at the first wash — sanforising and finishing treatments reduce this shrinkage.

  • Very soft, pleasant hand feel with excellent skin tolerance
  • High tensile strength — even higher when wet than dry
  • Downside: high water and pesticide consumption in conventional cultivation
  • Certifications such as GOTS, Better Cotton Initiative and OEKO-TEX identify more sustainable material
