Description

Coconut coir fibre is obtained from the fibrous layer between the hard shell and the outer husk of the coconut. It consists mainly of cellulose and lignin, which makes it very stiff, pressure- and shape-stable, and one of the few natural fibres that is resistant to salt water. Main producers are India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

A distinction is made between brown coir from mature nuts (coarse, abrasion-resistant) and finer white coir from unripe nuts (more flexible, for yarns and nets). In textiles coir is used mainly for door mats, brushes, coir runners, seat cushion inserts and as a natural non-woven in orthopaedic and ecological mattresses.

  • Global fibre output over 1.2 million tonnes per year (2020)
  • Extremely abrasion- and salt-water resistant — ideal for outdoor and marine use
  • Fully biodegradable
  • Not suitable for next-to-skin garments — hand feel too coarse
