Description

Fibershed is a non-profit founded around 2010/2011 by Rebecca Burgess in Northern California, dedicated to building regional fibre systems from field through processing back to composting the garment (soil to soil). Fibershed cotton is grown, ginned, spun and manufactured within a defined regional catchment and often carries the Climate Beneficial label when regenerative farming (soil building, compost, cover crops, holistic grazing) sequesters more carbon in the soil than the value chain emits.

Fibershed is not a certification body like GOTS but a producer and manufacturer network. For apparel brands it delivers maximum regional traceability and a soil-climate focus rather than pure fibre quality.

  • Regional value creation with short transport distances
  • Linked to the Climate Beneficial Agriculture programme
  • Complements standards such as GOTS or Textile Exchange, does not replace them
  • Currently scaled mainly in Northern California and a handful of US regions
