Description

Gassing (also called yarn singeing) is a finishing step for cotton yarns in which the spun yarn is drawn at high speed (300–800 m/min) through one or more open gas flames. All protruding fibre ends burn off instantly, giving the yarn a much smoother, shinier and more even surface. The core fibre itself is largely unaffected by the brief flame contact.

Gassed cotton is the classic preparatory stage for mercerised cotton: gassing produces the smooth surface, mercerisation with caustic soda then adds silky lustre and dye affinity. Yarns advertised as "gassed & mercerised" or "double-mercerised" are used in premium polo shirts (Lacoste, Sunspel), business dress shirts, fine-gauge knitwear and twisted sewing threads.

  • Higher tensile strength thanks to reduced surface friction
  • Shinier, silkier appearance — key for two-fold yarns and polo pique
  • Less pilling due to removal of surface fibre ends
  • Standard preparation step before mercerising and sanforising
