Ribbed cotton
Also known as: Rib Knit
Cotton knit with pronounced longitudinal ribs — highly stretchy and shape-elastic, classic for cuffs.
Description
In a rib knit, knit and purl stitches alternate lengthwise, forming pronounced vertical ribs. Typical variants are 1×1, 2×1 or 2×2 ribs. The construction gives high crosswise stretch and good recovery.
Ribbed cotton is used classically for cuffs on sleeves, ribbed collars, beanies and underwear, but also for full ribbed shirts, dresses and loungewear. The ridged surface makes ribbed shirts look figure-hugging and feminine. Elastane is often blended in for extra recovery.
