Description

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) distinguishes two labelling grades in its current version: “organic” requires at least 95 % of the natural fibres to come from certified organic cultivation; “made with (X %) organic” requires at least 70 %. The remaining share must consist only of clearly defined fibres — e.g. up to 10 % synthetic or regenerated fibres, up to 25 % elastic regenerated fibres for sportswear and underwear.

GOTS is run by four member organisations: IVN (Germany), Soil Association (UK), Organic Trade Association (USA) and Japan Organic Cotton Association. In 2008 they founded Global Standard gGmbH, which operates the standard. GOTS goes beyond raw fibre quality: certain dyes, chlorine bleaches and PVC are prohibited, and social criteria based on the ILO core labour conventions are audited on site every year.

  • Two grades: “organic” ≥ 95 %, “made with organic” ≥ 70 %
  • Positive list for chemicals, bans on dyes and auxiliaries
  • Annual on-site inspection of the full supply chain
  • ILO-based social criteria
