Cotton whose fibres have been parallelised by carding — the standard preparatory step before spinning.
Description
In carding, opened raw cotton passes through a card with counter-rotating rollers and fine wire clothing. The fibres are opened up, aligned and freed of dust, neps and tangles, forming an even sliver ready for spinning.
Carded cotton is the base quality, used mainly for value-priced T-shirts, towels, bed linen and technical textiles. Unlike combed cotton it still contains short fibres, giving slight pilling tendency and a somewhat rougher surface. Carding is a necessary preparation step for both carded and combed yarns.
