Description
Mohair comes from the angora goat, whose name goes back to the Turkish province of Ankara (formerly Angora). Today's main breeding areas are South Africa (about 50 % of world production), Lesotho, Argentina, Australia and the USA (Texas). A goat is shorn twice a year and yields 3–6 kg of fibre.
Characteristic features are the intense sheen, long curl and excellent dye uptake. Classification follows age: Kid Mohair from animals up to 18 months is 23–27 µm and the finest grade; Young Goat and Adult are correspondingly coarser. Mohair is wrinkle-free, warm in winter and cool in summer, water-repellent and stores moisture without feeling wet. The Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS) has certified animal-friendly husbandry since 2020 following criticism from PETA.
