Description

Silk is obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm (Bombyx mori), which feeds on mulberry leaves. A single cocoon yields a reelable continuous filament of 600 to 1,500 m, reeled by unwinding the cocoons in hot water. Main producers are China and India.

Silk fibres are made of the protein fibroin and are extremely fine, lustrous, smooth yet strong. They regulate temperature, are skin-friendly and take dyes brilliantly. Classic uses: blouses, scarves, ties, dresses, bed linen, cushions. Alternatives are tussah silk (wilder look) and peace silk (worms are not killed).
