Fine mulberry silk yarn with crêpe twist — the basis for the flowing crêpe de Chine fabric.
Description
For crêpe de Chine (CdC), very fine mulberry silk is twisted into a yarn with a pronounced crêpe twist (2,000-3,000 turns per metre). Alternating S and Z twists of the weft yarns produce the fabric's characteristic slightly grainy, matte surface and soft drape when woven in plain weave.
The fibre comes from the cocoon of the Bombyx mori silk moth and is degummed in several baths, which reveals its characteristic sheen and smooth hand. CdC silk is significantly lighter (approx. 12-16 momme) than satin silk and is used for blouses, dresses, scarves and premium linings.
