Rare alpaca breed with lock-like rather than crimped fleece — dreadlock-style strands with high sheen.
Description
The Suri alpaca is one of the two alpaca breeds (the other being Huacaya) and makes up less than 10 % of the global population — a much rarer and more valuable type. Instead of crimped curls, the fleece forms straight-hanging, dreadlock-style locks with exceptional sheen and silky structure.
Suri fibres measure similar to Huacaya at 18–25 µm but are noticeably smoother and glossier. They are particularly well suited to woven fabrics with fluid drape — suits, coats, formal wear, scarves and fine suiting cloth — while Huacaya works better for knits thanks to its crimp. The fibre is hypoallergenic (no lanolin), extremely durable and available in 22 natural colours. Breeders in Peru, Bolivia, Australia, the USA and Germany have been working since the 1990s to restore the Suri population, which had almost disappeared through crossbreeding with Huacaya.
