Softly napped cotton fabric in twill or plain weave — 140–200 gsm, a classic for shirts, bedding and pyjamas.
Description
Cotton flannel is a light-to-medium weight fabric in twill or plain weave that is napped on one or both sides after weaving. Rotating needle rollers pull short fibres out of the yarn to create a soft, warming pile. Typical weights are 140–160 gsm for shirting and 180–200 gsm for bedding and pyjamas.
Unlike fleece (a thick polyester knit), flannel is a woven natural-fibre fabric — more breathable and far less prone to static. Classics include tartan-pattern lumberjack shirts ("Buffalo Check") and solid-colour bedding qualities from Scandinavian mills. High-end flannel is brushed twice — once coarsely after weaving and once finely after dyeing — creating the characteristic long-lasting softness.
