Description

Bedford cord is a woven fabric (not a pile fabric!) with distinctly raised lengthwise ribs, produced by a special weave construction: two warp layers are interlaced with the weft alternately, with additional stuffer warp threads lying under the ribs to raise them. Unlike corduroy (a cut-pile velveteen), Bedford cord has no cut pile — the ribs consist of the firm woven ground.

Named after the 19th-century textile city of New Bedford (Massachusetts). Fibres are classically cotton or wool, today also cotton-polyester blends. Weights 250-450 g/m². The hand is firm, robust and slightly crisp; the ribs run strictly in the warp direction and give the fabric a sporty, functional character.

Uses: riding breeches, work trousers (the classic American Bedford cord trousers), uniform trousers, saddler's goods, robust jackets and upholstery. In the US Navy an impregnated variant was used as Jungle Cloth for flight garments.
