Description

Cambric is a fine, densely woven plain-weave fabric, originally linen, named after the northern French city of Cambrai (Flemish Kamerijk), where it was perfected in the 16th century by the weaver Jean-Baptiste Chambray. Today cambric is made almost exclusively from fine combed cotton (Ne 60-100) and lightly calendered, which gives it a discreet sheen — this calender is what distinguishes it from the otherwise very similar end-on-end.

Weights 90-140 g/m², thread counts 45-70 threads/cm. The hand is smooth, cool and slightly papery; the drape precise. Cambric is often given a light starch finish and used as a stiffening for cuffs, collars and waistbands.

Uses: shirts, blouses, fine bed linen, linings (hats, cuffs, collars), handkerchiefs, children's wear and historical costume. In tailoring, cambric is a staple for interior structuring.
