Description

Canvas is a coarse plain-weave fabric from thick cotton or linen yarns (often cotton-polyester blends). The base weave is 1/1 plain, sometimes basket weave (2/2), with very high thread densities and heavy yarns (Ne 3-10). Weights range from 200 g/m² (light canvas) to 700 g/m² (sailcloth, tent canvas). It is a woven fabric.

The hand is stiff and substantial, softening with washing. Canvas is highly tear- and abrasion-resistant, so it is used for work trousers (Carhartt style), jackets (chore coat), backpacks, sails, tents and painter's grounds. Impregnations with wax (waxed cotton) or PU increase water repellency.

A distinction is made between duck canvas (dense, smooth, measured in ounces) and plain canvas (rougher, hessian-like). US canvas is often given in oz/sq yd (7-24 oz). Classic trade names include Cordura (nylon canvas) and Duckcloth. Canvas is today also a fashion material (tote bags, sneakers like Converse Chuck Taylor).
