Charmeuse
Also known as: Silk charmeuse
Light satin fabric with a highly twisted crepe weft — glossy face, matt back, soft drape.
Description
Charmeuse is a light satin fabric which, unlike classic duchesse satin, uses a highly twisted crepe yarn in the weft. The warp-faced satin creates the glossy, smooth face; the back looks matt and slightly grainy thanks to the crepe. The fabric is thin, flowing and much softer than other satins — hence the name (French charmeuse = charming).
Fibres are classically silk (silk charmeuse is an icon of the lingerie industry), today also viscose, polyester and elastane blends. Weights 60-120 g/m². The hand is smooth, cool and creamy; the drape extremely fluid. Elastane blends (2-6 %) give stretch and figure-hugging fit.
Uses: lingerie, nightwear, slips, camisoles, blouses, bias-cut evening dresses, linings, bed linen and loungewear. Charmeuse is the classic boudoir and slipdress fabric (1930s bias-cut dresses, again on-trend through 90s minimalism).
