Description

Crêpe de Chine (CDC, French for crepe from China) is a fine, densely woven crepe fabric of silk or filament substitutes. It is characterised by a smooth warp combined with a highly twisted crepe weft (alternating S- and Z-twist); this gives the fabric a subtly grainy surface, a matt sheen and a fluid drape — denser and heavier than chiffon or georgette but significantly lighter than satin.

Traditionally mulberry silk, today also viscose, polyester or acetate. Weights 50-110 g/m². The hand is smooth and cool, the drape straight and heavy for its weight. Historically CDC was one of the staple fabrics of 20th-century French haute couture (Vionnet, Chanel and others).

Uses: blouses, dresses, skirts, loungewear, nightwear and linings. In business wear it is popular for blouses with a fluid drape; in evening wear it serves as a base for simple cuts with maximal material impact. Also a premium ground for printed scarves.
