Dupioni / Shantung

Silk fabric with an irregular, slubby weft yarn spun from double cocoons — brightly lustrous, slightly crisp and typical for bridal and formalwear as well as premium home textiles.
Description
Dupioni and closely related Shantung are firm silk fabrics whose distinctive character comes from double cocoons. In these so-called twin cocoons two silkworms have entangled their filaments. When reeled, the result is an irregular, slubby weft yarn that gives the finished fabric its typical flame effect and lively lustre.
Dupioni is usually denser, heavier and even more slubby than Shantung; otherwise the two qualities are very similar. They are used for wedding dresses, evening and cocktail wear, waistcoat and jacket linings, ties as well as premium cushions, curtains and wall decorations. Because of their crease- and light-sensitive character, curtains should have a UV-stable underlining.
