Description

Georgette (fully crepe Georgette) is a light, semi-transparent crepe fabric in plain weave. Its character comes from highly twisted crepe yarns alternating S- and Z-twist — these opposing twists create the typical grainy, sandy-matt surface and the fluid drape. The fabric is named after the Parisian dressmaker Georgette de la Plante around 1900.

Fibres are classically silk, today mainly viscose, polyester or nylon filament. Weights 40-90 g/m². Georgette is a touch denser and more opaque than chiffon but similarly fluid; it looks matt rather than shimmering and is surprisingly hard-wearing for its lightness.

Uses: flowing blouses, skirts, evening dresses, sari cloth, scarves, wraps and kimono sleeves. Georgette is often worked into pleats, flounces and drape effects because it amplifies movement visually. Popular in stagewear for dance dresses (light swing, matt stage reflection).
