Description

Glen check is a compound check pattern built from two superimposed repeats: a small pepita or houndstooth base and a larger, block-like stripe check. The repeat is created by alternating warp and weft groups (typically 4 dark : 4 light plus a colour stripe every 24-30 threads). A coloured overcheck (blue, red, green) is often added — this variant is called Prince of Wales check.

The name comes from Glen Urquhart near Loch Ness, where the pattern was developed from 1840 onwards on the eponymous estate for gamekeepers' uniforms. Traditionally worsted or woollen wool, weights 220-350 g/m² for suits and coats.

The Prince of Wales check was made world-famous by Edward VIII and is still regarded as a classic suiting pattern for business and dressy countrywear. Uses: suits, jackets, coats, waistcoats, skirts, dresses and accessories.
