Description

Houndstooth is a two-tone broken check with characteristic pointed extensions that resemble a dog's canine tooth. It is classically woven in a 2:2 twill with four light and four dark ends alternating in warp and weft. The base colours are usually black and white, sometimes brown/beige or navy/white.

The size scale runs from the fine puppytooth (about 3–5 mm repeat) through classic houndstooth (10–15 mm) to coarse glen houndstooth (> 25 mm). The oldest known example was found in Bronze Age Celtic textile finds at Hallstatt salt mine, Austria (c. 1500–1200 BC). Classic uses: blazers, skirts, coats, business accessories. Compared to the German Hahnentritt the difference is only fineness and cultural context – the weave principle is identical.
