Description

Broadcloth is the American term for a very densely woven poplin in pure plain weave. It is characterised by an extremely high thread count (typically 100×80 to 140×80 threads/inch) with a finer warp than weft — producing a smooth, almost silky surface with a very fine horizontal rib.

Classic weights are 110–140 gsm. Broadcloth is used above all for high-end business shirts, often from 2/1 or 2/2 plied yarns ("two-ply"), which yield an especially stable, soft surface. Unlike Oxford (with basket structure) or twill (with diagonal ridge), broadcloth looks uniform and formal and works perfectly with a tie. Easy-care finishes ("non-iron") are frequently applied on top.

  • Weave: pure plain weave (1/1)
  • Thread count: 100×80 to 140×80/inch
  • Often from double-plied yarns ("two-ply")
  • Perfect for tailored business shirts and blouses
