Mikado silk
Also known as: Silk mikado, mikado satin, bridal mikado
Heavy, tightly woven satin in silk (or silk/synthetic blend) — the go-to fabric for structured bridal gowns.
Description
Mikado silk is a premium satin in dense satin weave, weighing around 200–350 g/m². Originally made in pure silk, it is today most often woven as a silk/polyester or silk/elastane blend to balance body and cost.
The cloth combines a noble, subdued lustre with pronounced firmness — it falls majestically and holds sharp silhouettes such as A-line, ballgown or mermaid. Unlike lightweight silk satins, mikado hardly wrinkles and is the fabric of choice for structured bridal and evening wear.
- Dense satin with a subdued sheen and excellent shape retention
- Around 200–350 g/m² — much heavier than lightweight duchesse satin
- Ideal for ballgown, A-line and mermaid silhouettes
- Also offered as "faux mikado" in 100 % polyester
