Description

Panama basketweave (also called basket, hopsack or Panama weave) is a variant of plain weave in which two or more warp yarns are carried together over two or more weft yarns. This creates a characteristic squared pattern reminiscent of a coarse woven basket.

Compared with classic plain weave, basketweave drapes more softly, has a more open hand and a slightly breathable character. Typical applications are sport shirts (Oxford shirts use a 2:1 variant), light summer blazers, backpack fabrics and durable cushion and upholstery covers. The name Panama derives from its resemblance to the plait of the Panama hat.

  • Typical weave ratios 2:2, 3:3 or 4:4
  • Slightly softer and more elastic than plain weave
  • Classic for shirts (Oxford), light blazers and home décor
  • Tends to slip with very large weave floats — edges must be well finished
