Panama weave

Derived plain weave with grouped warp and weft threads producing a cube- or basket-like pattern.
Description
Panama or basket weave is a derived plain weave in which two or more warp threads and the same number of weft threads are grouped together. The result is a distinct cube- or basket-like pattern (also called basket weave). 2/2 is square Panama; 3/3, 4/4 and larger are coarser; uneven groupings (2×1 as in Oxford cloth) produce rectangular Panama.
Panama fabrics are looser and softer than pure plain weave — the longer floats give a more fluid drape but reduce tear strength. Fibres: cotton (hopsack for jackets, Aida cloth for embroidery), wool (light summer jackets and blazer fabrics), linen. Weights 150-320 g/m².
Uses: blazers (classic hopsack), summer jackets, embroidery ground fabrics (Aida, Hardanger), decorative home textiles and bags. Popular wherever an airy but structured look is desired.
