Polyester pongee
Also known as: PES pongee
Light polyester plain-weave fabric; classic shell for windbreakers, sport and rain jackets.
Description
Polyester pongee is the synthetic standard form of pongee, made from polyester filament yarns (dtex 30-100) in a fine plain weave. Thread counts of 100-180 threads/cm with weights of 40-90 g/m². Common trade codes are 190T (190 threads per inch total), 210T, 240T — higher numbers meaning denser fabric. It is a woven fabric.
Finishes are mandatory: PU or silicone coating (for waterproof sportswear, usually rated PU-500 to PU-3000 water column), DWR impregnation, cire finish (waxed look), peach-skin finish (velvety hand). Colour is applied in the filament (solution dyed) or piece dyed.
Uses: windbreakers, rain jackets (two-layer constructions with membrane lamination), tracksuits, cycling wear, budget outdoor jackets. Advantages: light, robust, colourfast, quick-drying, standard import article. Disadvantages: no elastic recovery (no elastane), plasticky hand in cheap qualities. Major competitor to nylon pongees among outdoor brands.
