Description

Poplin is a plain weave (basic 1/1 interlacing) with a pronounced weft rib. It arises when the warp is much finer than the weft and warp density is high, so the weft wraps around the warp forming transverse ribs. Traditionally from cotton, today also from cotton-elastane blends or cotton-polyester (non-iron shirts).

Typical thread counts are 60-140 warp threads/cm and 30-60 weft threads/cm; weights 100-160 g/m². Thread density, often expressed as ply count (2/100s, 2/140s), is a quality indicator for shirtings. The hand is smooth, cool, slightly crisp with subtle sheen.

Poplin is the standard fabric for business shirts, formal blouses and uniform shirts. Two-ply poplins (plied yarns in warp and weft) offer particular dimensional stability. The name derives from French papelaine (papal cloth from Avignon). It is a woven fabric. Compared to twill, poplin drapes stiffer and breathes better thanks to plain weave.
