Repeat
Also known as: Pattern repeat, Repeat unit, Weave repeat
Smallest repeating unit of a weave, print or knit pattern.
Description
The repeat (German Rapport) is the smallest unit of a pattern that recurs across the whole fabric or print. Types:
- Weave repeat: smallest interlacing unit (plain 2/2, twill 4, satin 5…)
- Pattern repeat for print/jacquard: recurring motif, given in cm or thread count (width and height repeat)
- Repeat drop: sideways offset (half, third drop) – important for wallpapers, checks and stripes
Cutting pattern-matched fabrics (glen check, tartan, stripes) requires alignment of the repeat on all panels, which typically adds 5–20 % to material consumption. In textile digital printing the repeat is embedded in the print file.
