Ripstop in detail

Plain or panama weave with reinforcing yarns woven in on a grid of about 5–8 mm — small tears cannot propagate.
Description
Ripstop is not a distinct weave in itself but a reinforcement pattern: thicker warp and weft yarns are woven into a base weave (usually plain or panama) at regular intervals of roughly 5–8 mm. They form a visible grid that stops a tear at the next reinforcement (rip stops). The remaining area stays comparatively light.
Ripstop fabrics are made mainly from polyamide (nylon) and polyester, less often from cotton, silk or polypropylene. Typical denier ranges span very light 20–40 den for ultralight tents and wind shells, 70–210 den for classic outdoor jackets, up to 500–1000 den for Cordura-type backpack fabrics. The construction originates in military use (parachute fabrics, World War II) and is now standard for tents, windbreakers, softshells, backpacks, flags and kites.
