Ripstop

Plain weave with grid-integrated reinforcement threads that prevent tears from spreading.
Description
Ripstop is a plain weave (rarely twill) in which thicker reinforcement threads are inserted at regular intervals (typically every 5-10 mm) in both warp and weft. This creates a visible check grid that stops tears from spreading — the tear halts at the next reinforcement thread. It is a woven fabric.
A classic military product (US Airborne, WWII), made from nylon (polyamide 6.6), polyester or cotton. Nylon ripstop has weights of 40-200 g/m² and is usually coated with PU or silicone for waterproofness (tents, sleeping bags, parachutes). Ripstop cotton is used for outdoor trousers (trekking pants) and uniforms (BDU, ACU).
Thread density 40-80 threads/cm for nylon, coarser for cotton. Reinforcement threads are often plied double or triple. The hand is smooth, paper-like and rustling in thin qualities, robust and flexible. Finishes: DWR (Durable Water Repellent), C0 PFC-free impregnation, ripstop Cordura with nylon 6.6 high-tenacity yarns.
