Description

Royal Oxford is the most formal member of the oxford family. Unlike classic oxford (grainy 2/1 basket effect) and pinpoint oxford (finer but still visible basket), royal oxford uses far finer plied yarns (typically 80/2 to 120/2) in an elaborate dobby weave that from a distance looks uniform but up close reveals a fine diamond or basket pattern with subtle sheen.

The result: fabric drapes more softly than classic oxford, has a smoother, dressier surface and pairs happily with suit and tie. Typical weight 110–140 g/m2. Weave-wise it is an enhanced basket / dobby construction, often in 100 percent long-staple cotton (Supima, Giza) spun as two-fold yarn. Brand examples: Charles Tyrwhitt Royal Oxford, TM Lewin Non-Iron Royal Oxford, Brooks Brothers 1818 Royal Oxford. In corporate wear, royal oxford is the premium option above the standard basket poplin.

  • Far finer plied yarns (80/2–120/2) than classic oxford
  • Dense diamond/basket dobby weave — subtle sheen, formal look
  • Suit- and tie-compatible; ideal for business corporate wear
  • Classically in Supima or Giza cotton, two-fold yarn
