Description

Circular knit is a category of knits produced on circular knitting machines: needles sit in one or more rotating cylinders and form loops continuously, so an endless tube is created. Production is highly economical, with high output between 1 and 40 kg of fabric per hour depending on gauge.

Types are single-cylinder machines (for single jersey, pique, slub jersey), double-cylinder machines (interlock, double rib) and structure circular machines (jacquard, terry, rib). Gauges E12 to E32 (needles per inch). Diameters typically 20-38 inch for standard apparel fabrics.

Advantage: very high productivity, economical for basic apparel. Disadvantage: tubular fabric must be slit open and laid flat, causing creases and small water marks. Circular knit is the basis for T-shirts, polos, sports shirts, dresses, underwear — practically the whole mass knitwear industry. Distinction: flat knit (on flatbed machines) is used for sweaters and cardigans.
