Description

Shantung is a plain-weave silk fabric traditionally woven from tussah silk — the fibre of wild oak silkworms. Their shorter, uneven filaments create the famous weft slubs that give the cloth its unmistakable bamboo-like surface.

The hand is crisp with a slight rustle yet still surprisingly refined; the sheen is softer and warmer than mulberry satin. Originally woven in China's Shandong province, shantung is today also produced in polyester and viscose imitations. It is a classic for bridal and evening gowns, cheongsams, festive sheath dresses, premium neckties and interior accessories.

  • Slub texture from irregular wild-silk yarns in the weft
  • Crisp, paper-like hand — yet very breathable
  • Muted, natural lustre — noble but never garish
  • Slubs are wanted, not a fabric flaw
