Description

Mesh is an umbrella term for all textile surfaces with clearly visible openings between the yarns. Construction variants range from circular-knit mesh (tuck stitches with skipped loops) via warp knits (raschel mesh, powernet) to leno-woven mesh. Opening sizes range from 0.5 mm (fine mesh) to 5-8 mm (coarse mesh); the design defines the use.

Fine mesh with 0.5-1.5 mm holes serves as breathable inner layer in sports garments, jerseys and high-vis vests. Medium mesh (2-4 mm) appears in sports shirts, basketball jerseys and light sports bras. Coarse mesh (5-8 mm) is used for football goalkeeper jerseys, sport nets and decorative applications. Material is mostly polyester filament, partly with elastane for stretch.

Advantages: very high air and moisture permeability, low weight (60-160 g/m²), fast drying. Drawbacks: hardly any thermal insulation, not opaque, sensitive to snagging. Care: 30-40 °C, no fabric softener, laundry bag for shape stability. Recycled polyester is increasingly standard in sustainable sport brands.
