Rib knit

Umbrella term for knitwear in rib structure, regardless of the specific 1x1, 2x2 or fancy variant.
Description
Rib knit collectively refers to all knitted constructions whose base structure is a rib. Besides classic 1x1 rib this includes 2x2 rib (wide double rib), full and half cardigan (pearl rib), fancy combined ribs and Aran-type cable patterns on rib base. All variants have very high transverse stretch which decreases with wider ribs.
Knitting takes place on double-cylinder circular machines or flat machines (for fancy). Material ranges from fine-rib cotton (Ne 30-40) to merino wool (Ne 20-30) and cashmere-cotton blends. Weights 200-380 g/m² depending on structure and yarn.
Rib knit was highly fashionable in the 1990s and again from 2020 — as rib dresses, rib cardigans, body tops and loungewear. Care: 30-40 °C, no fabric softener, low tumble; dry flat and reshape. Ribs with elastane keep shape best; pure wool ribs need gentle wash.
